Review on Coal Office

The Coal Office restaurant is a collaboration between renowned Chef Assaf Granit and the critically acclaimed British designer Tom Dixon. Set in a former Victorian coal yard, it will function not only as a restaurant but also as Tom Dixon's new Headquarters with a shop, workshop and office space. Located adjacent to Granary Square in King's Cross, the restaurant is spread across two floors with two lovely terraces, one on the ground floor and the other on the roof.

Curving round the Regent's Canal, many of the building's original features including the industrial Victorian brickwork and windows have been retained, while the interiors have undergone a stunning transformation by Tom Dixon's Design Research Studio. The ground floor occupies the 19th-century brick aches with pale and coal-black wooden parquet flooring, illuminated by Dixon's sensational light fixtures. Furnished with a variety of different marble table tops and contemporary design elements, the restaurant boasts a ravishing décor that oozes style and modernity.

Israeli chef and restaurateur Assaf Granit, well known in London for his successful restaurants The Palomar and The Barbary, has also has established highly rated restaurants in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. The open kitchen sends out vibrant Middle Eastern cuisine with a series of small, in-between and big plates. Moroccan fennel salad with orange, olives, almonds and harissa or maybe chicken liver pate with date scones, hazelnut and honey could be a good starting point. Among the big plates look for lamb chops, celeriac, bone marrow crumble and ambaneh or for fish fans there's Yellow is the New Black, clams and mussels with yellow bulgur. Desserts move into the realm of rice pudding with mango chutney and sour cream ice cream or a Not So Simple Cheesecake with pistachio, financier and lemon curd.

There's a carefully curated wine list to accompany the dishes including a few from English vineyards.
