Review on Kym's
Kym's is the second outing from Michelin starred chef Andrew Wong having established his eponymous restaurant in Victoria, that was originally called Kym's for 27 years during his parents tenure. This latest incarnation of Kym's is set in the burgeoning foodie destination at Bloomberg Arcade, designed by Foster & Partners.
Spread out over two floors, the main dining room is on the ground floor with an open kitchen and a statement semi-circular copper-topped bar covered in reclaimed turquoise roof tiles. It sits beneath a stunning five metre cherry pink blossom tree which spans both floors. The décor created by international designer Michaelis Boyd has a soft palette of blush pinks and deep plums with white Carrara marble tables and dining chairs by Neri&Hu. A curved staircase with oak treads leads to the mezzanine space offering views over the restaurant and this can be curtained off for private dining.
The kitchen focuses on a modern interpretation of classic Chinese dishes with an emphasis on the ancient craft of Chinese roasting meats. Among the small plates there's pork skewers, oyster sauce, coconut and peanuts or from the sharing dishes you might choose pork and shrimp 'Bao Bao', fried egg, pat chun and crispy chilli. The Three Treasure is also a popular choice with crispy pork belly, soy chicken and Iberico pork char sui. To finish, the dessert menu promises Hong Kong pineapple bun with custard or Sichuan pepper and star anise poached blackberries.
The concise wine list looks mainly to Europe and there's locally brewed beers and Chinese influenced cocktails.
