Review on WOOD Manchester
MasterChef 2015 winner Simon Wood opened his eponymous restaurant at the First Street development in the heart of Manchester, once home to the Gaythorn Gas Works. A short walk from both Deansgate and Manchester Oxford Road rail stations, it's a stylish two storey affair with modern industrial-esque interiors. Decked out in shades of charcoal and teal, it features dark wood furnishings and cosy banquette booths. A chef's table is set around the open kitchen and there's also a private dining room on the mezzanine level, overlooking the restaurant through floor-to-ceiling plate glass.
Since its opening the WOOD restaurant has seen a plethora of awards for its seasonal modern British menu, served in a relaxed and friendly ambience. The visual presentation of each plate is the final step in the process, ensuring that it not only tastes delicious, but looks good as well. Among the repertoire of starters you might find wood pigeon, fig, endive and pancetta before a main course of halibut, borlotti, clam, mussel and lardo. To close the show why not choose Simon's award winning citrus tutti-frutti or for those with a savoury tooth, the cheeseboard is served with chutney and pumpernickel croute.
The concise wine list has options available by the glass and carafe and there's signature cocktails like Nirvana, amaretto, maraschino and cherry.
