Review on Paladar
Paladar is a creative Latin American restaurant, wine bar and bodega launched by Charles Tyler, who was one of the original founders of the successful Malaysian restaurant Champor-Champor in Bermondsey.
Paladar, which means 'palate', is located just a few minutes' walk from Elephant and Castle tube station on St George's Circus, close to the home to a large Latin American community. Flooded with lots of natural light from its glass frontage and ceiling skylights, it features contemporary furnishings and a lovely Rays of Palar mural on the rear wall painted by Tyler's former business partner Adu Amran. There's also the added bonus of a courtyard and terrace when the sun shines.
Colombian-born Head Chef Jose Rubio-Guevara sends out an array of gluten-free small, medium and large plates designed for sharing, inspired by Colombian, Mexican, Cuban and Peruvian cuisine. Look for dishes along the lines of empanadas filled with slow-cooked beef brisket and coriander-chilli sauce or Caribbean lamb stew, sweet potatoes and wild mint. For those who prefer fish there's grilled octopus, tempura breadfruit, candied lime and red onion pickle and there are plenty of vegetarian options like roast aubergine, fried beans with salsa negra and Maya hummus. For a sweet ending there's banana and chocolate bread pudding served with smoked cinnamon ice cream or purple corn churros, coffee dulce de leche and chocolate-chilli sauce.
Sommelier Rafael Cabezas-Castro, who has worked for acclaimed chefs Gordon Ramsay and Jason Atherton, is on hand to guide you through the wine list. Pop into the adjoining bodega to buy South American wines and spirits to take away.
