Review on Din Tai Fung

The world-famous Taiwanese dumpling chain Din Tai Fung opened its first European operation in London's Covent Garden in December 2018. Launched by Taster Food UK in partnership with Singapore-based BreadTalk Group, it's the 153th Din Tai Fung restaurant with siblings in Taiwan, Asia, Australia and the Middle East. A brightly lit venue with a pared-back décor, set over two floors seating 250 diners, it features their trademark oriental wood panelling and glass-fronted kitchen where you can view the chefs at work.

The kitchen is famed for their xiao long bao soup dumplings that come in a variety of fillings such as truffle and pork, and chilli crab and pork, taking up to 40 minutes to prepare they are easily recognisable by the 18 pleats used in their intricate wrapping. Elsewhere on the menu is their signature steamed chicken soup which is cooked for six hours, and other dishes worth noting are Din Tai Fung's oriental salad made with julienne seaweed, bean sprouts, tofu and rice vermicelli, tossed in a light and tangy sesame oil dressing or their Shanghainese drunken chicken, tender chicken thighs, steeped in aromatic Chinese rice wine.

Their cocktail bar serves Taiwanese cocktails and Chinese teas including a traditional Taiwan Pearl Milk Tea served with sweet tapioca pearls.
