Review on Akira at Japan House London
Opened in the summer of 2018, the Akira restaurant is set within cultural centre of Japan House, an exhibition-led place that showcases the very best of Japan, with branches already established in Los Angeles and São Paulo. A three-storey Grade II listed Art Deco building, the restaurant which takes it's name from executive chef Shimizu Akira is located on the first floor. A pared-back space with a black slatted ceiling, black metal lattice screening and handcrafted wooden tables and chairs. There's an open kitchen where you can watch the chefs at work, and a bar which overlooks Kensington High Street.
Dishes are exquisitely presented on lovely tableware sourced from artisans across Japan and are mainly cooked over a Robata grill. The kitchen cruises its way through offerings like seabass with shiso Genovese sauce, teriyaki wagyu beef roll, grilled asparagus with sweet red miso, accompanied by rice served in a clay pot. Sweet-toothed guests can satisfy their cravings with a matcha chocolate fondant or maybe their signature Akira pudding.
The wine selection is designed to enhance the flavours across the menu, there's an extensive saké list, together with Japanese beers and cocktails.
