Review on The Bull Ditchling
The Bull is a multi-award winning pub with rooms, voted 'Best Freehouse' at The Great British Pub Awards 2018, it's set in the the picturesque village of Ditchling, just 15 minutes drive from Brighton. Dating back to the 16th century, the Grade II listed Tudor building started life as a stopover for monks, who were travelling to the nearby monastery in Lewes. Nowadays, it's still in the business of providing genuine, personal hospitality, and it welcomes travellers with roaring log fires, locally brewed real ales from their own Bedlam brewery and fine food.
The kitchen draws on supplies from local farms, estates and the day boats that land just 20 minutes from their door, as well as pickings from their own kitchen garden. Among the small plates you might like the look of seared mackerel, beetroot, horseradish and dill or for those with a preference for meat there's pigeon breast, celeriac puree, pickled mushroom, cranberry and orange. After that consider, Bedlam ale battered cod fillet, hand cut chips, peas and tartare or braised beef short rib, bone marrow brioche, garlic puree, roscoff onion and colcannon. Desserts hit the button with a rum baba, fig, maple and hazelnut or pistachio crème brûlée with raspberry.
The Bull showcases a carefully curated wine list with over 20 available by the glass, 13 craft ales, a tranquil garden to sip them in when the weather obliges, and four individually styled rooms should you wish to extend your stay.
