Review on M Victoria Street
Riding high on the success of M Threadneedle Street, Martin Williams former MD of Gaucho for nine years and chef Michael Reid, ex Le Gavroche and Gaucho have opened a second restaurant, M Victoria Street. A multi-award winning venue it's located in the Zig Zag building, just a short walk from Victoria Station, the Apollo Theatre and the Victoria Palace Theatre.
It's an ambitious and enterprising venture that combines the virtues of two award winning restaurants M Grill and M Raw, a cocktail bar, a tasting room and wine bar and private rooms, together with a wine shop at street level. The interiors have been created by Rene Dekker Design, with the 130 cover oval dining room decorated in deep mint greens, dark timber and rich velvets. There's bespoke banquette seating and a stunning coffer ceiling with distressed copper vinyl and contemporary pendant lighting.
Diners can choose whether to opt for M Raw serving Japanese and Peruvian small plates from the open kitchen, or M Grill which is a carnivores delight where they can enjoy chicken karaage, chilli and caramel glaze, nori and kewpie mayonnaise and fermented Daikon amongst the starters. When it comes to main courses there's aged pigeon, beetroot, chicory and red amaranth or succulent steaks from countries like Argentina or Botswana in South Africa. After that, the kitchen sets out to impress with the likes of red velvet, Espuma cake, cream cheese and textures of raspberries or white chocolate ice cream, yuzu fudge, sesame and pear.
There's an excellent global wine list to accompany the food and a glittering choice of superstar cocktails.
