Review on Pompette

Pompette meaning tipsy in French is proving to be a resounding local success story, located on South Parade in the pretty north Oxford suburb of Summertown. The driving force behind the restaurant is husband and wife team Laura and Pascal Wiedemann, who took over the former Portabello restaurant in 2018. Pascal is a classically trained French chef, who previously worked with critically acclaimed chefs such as Henry Harris at Racine in Knightsbridge, as well as Ed Wilson in Terroirs.

The colourful dining room has a welcoming ambience with banquette seating and well-spaced tables on polished wooden floors. Exposed brick and navy blue walls are adorned with lots of eclectic artwork and there's a casual bar with high stools for nibbles and drinks.

The carte changes daily making the most of locally sourced ingredients offering an excellent value prix fixe menu for lunch and early evenings, as well as the evening a la carte menu. You might begin with snails, garlic, parsley, red wine sauce and crèpe parmentier before proceeding to a main course of slow cooked lamb shoulder, celeriac purée, carrots and wild garlic. Desserts continue the theme with a Kirsch choux bun, Griottines and hot chocolate sauce or blood orange parfait and curd paired with amaretti biscuits.

There's an interesting wine list including natural and low-intervention wines, with many available by the glass and carafe, as well as the Coravin system.
