Review on Ekte Nordic Kitchen
Located in the Bloomberg Arcade in the heart of London's financial district, Ekte Nordic Kitchen was launched by Danish-born banker-turned-restaurateur Soren Jessen, who has owned the very successful 1 Lombard Street since 1998. Etke means genuine or real in Norwegian and it operates as an all day restaurant, café and deli as well as offering takeaways, where it will emphasis minimal waste and recyclable biodegradable and reusable packaging.
The glass-fronted space by London-based Danish design studio JLKDS is a light and airy venue, showcasing Scandinavian interiors with a clean-cut look fused with industrial design elements. Oak and marble table tops are set with Werner chairs, while a leather banquette curves along one wall. There's an open kitchen where you can watch the chefs at work, and on sunny days the outside seating area is a popular choice.
Swedish born Head Chef Robin Freeman presents a diverse Nordic menu of small and large plates, as well as tasty Smørrebrød served on their house rye bread with offerings like Skagen-Prawn, crab, red onion, lumpfish roe, crème fraiche and dill. Elsewhere there's pan fried Cornish squid, smoked sea weed, lemon aioli and fennel salad or from the land rump of lamb with kohlrabi, cavolo nero, jus and chives. When it comes to desserts think cinnamon bun ice cream with a shot of apple brandy or rhubarb tart, cardamom crumble paired with buttermilk ice cream.
The food is matched by a thoughtfully chosen wine list which focuses on Europe.
