Review on The Newport
The Newport restaurant with rooms has certainly made its mark as a foodie destination since its launch in 2016, it has not only picked up two coveted rosettes and a Michelin Guide entry, but was crowned the AA Restaurant of the Year 2018-2019 for Scotland. It is the brainchild of chef patron Jamie Scott, who was the 2014 winner of BBC MasterChef The Professionals.
Just an hour's drive from Edinburgh, the restaurant is located in the small coastal town of Newport on Tay in the north-east of Fife. Occupying a large white painted Georgian building at the bottom of the high street, it's set over two floors with 60-covers. The pièce de résistance in the dining room is their coveted views across the River Tay towards Dundee, that also takes in the working harbour and the rail bridge.
Jamie has created an innovative menu of exciting dishes alongside refined classical favourites, with local seasonal ingredients the top of the agenda. Amongst the starters look for the likes of St Brides Farm chicken angolotti, morel mushrooms, broad beans and Madeira sauce or brown crab cream, seabuckthorn, sourdough and watercress. Main courses usher in Black Isle mutton, cauliflower, wild leek and sauce reform or from the sea Scrabster landed brill is served with Yorkshire asparagus, new potato and roasted mussels. The kitchen also offers a tasting menu showcasing Jamie's culinary talents which can be paired with wine.
