Review on Hawksmoor Edinburgh
Will Beckett and Huw Gott launched their award winning steak house in 2006 and have now established six successful restaurants in London, one in Manchester and headed to Edinburgh for their second venture outside the city. Located a short walk from Waverley Station, it's located in a beautiful refurbished Grade A listed building that once housed the banking hall of the former Royal Bank of Scotland's Headquarters.
Macaulay Sinclair have done a wonderful job of restoring the polished limestone columned and panelled dining room, using reclaimed and vintage furniture from the same era. Tables are made from old iroka hardwood laboratory tops, the bow-shaped bar comes from a Glasgow townhouse and the pass was produced from mahogany radiator covers acquired from the British Museum. The lovely etched glass windows are by artist Sadie McLelland and floors are from a Blackpool ballroom.
Menus reflect the seasons and the abundance of first-class Scottish produce, showcasing seafood from the coast and grass-fed native breed cattle from both sides of the border. Isle of Mull scallops, roasted with white port and garlic makes an excellent starting point before proceeding to the main event of your choice of steak with sauce or maybe monkfish grilled over charcoal, if fish is your preference. Proceedings conclude in style with a pear, almond and chestnut financier paired with rum ice cream or rhubarb brûlée tart with rhubarb sorbet.
There's an extensive wine list to accompany the food together with signature cocktails.
