Review on Tattu Birmingham

After successfully establishing their modern Chinese restaurant named Tattu in Manchester and a second venue in Leeds, brothers Drew and Adam Jones followed up with a third restaurant in 2019 located in Birmingham. Occupying 5,000sq ft of the basement boiler room of The Grand hotel which was built in 1879, it's the biggest basement bar and restaurant in the city.

Set over two floors with stunning interiors, the design is inspired by the Chinese philosophy of yin and yan. The ground floor represents the yan element with a bar area and private dining room using reflective gold finishes and Calacatta marble flooring. The main dining room with an open kitchen showcases the yan side, featuring walls constructed from travertine rock imported from Hong Kong, sectioned with lovely oriental fretwork, booth-style tables and Tattu's beautiful signature blossom trees.

Designed for sharing, guests can sample artistically displayed dishes fused with traditional flavours, using modern cooking techniques from their talented team of chefs. Dim sum comes steamed or baked and fried along the lines of chicken truffle shumai and freshly shaved truffle or crispy duck rolls served with cherry hoisin sauce. Among the small plates there's much to enjoy such as chilli salt baby squid with sweet chilli and spring onion or red roast loin ribs with yellow bean, kumquats and star anise. Follow on with lotus leaf miso chicken, Shiitake mushroom, pak choi and sticky chilli rice or from the sea Thai style crispy monkfish, lime, shallots and lemongrass. Desserts conclude in style with a white chocolate and citrus cheesecake, lime matcha and strawberry or cherry blossom, chocolate mousse, cherry and candyfloss.

There's an extensive wine list to complement the food as well as signature cocktails like Skull Candy, Tattu's famous smoking skull with vodka, bubblegum and strawberry.
