Review on Emilia
Will Lander and Daniel Morgenthau, the duo behind the successful Woodford Restaurant Group that includes Michelin-starred Portland in Marylebone, as well as Clipstone and The Quality Chop House have added a fourth string to their bow with the opening of Italian restaurant Emila. Located within Bonhams' flagship London auction house in the heart of Mayfair, the restaurant takes inspiration from the Italian region of Emilia-Romagna.
Laid out over two floors, the ground floor has a wine bar and a concise menu based around charcuterie, cheese, small plates and hand-made pasta. Upstairs is a 25-cover light and airy restaurant, with full length glass windows that looks eminently chic with a modern décor that exudes an understated elegance.
Executive Chef Stuart Andrew produces refined Italian cuisine reflecting the very best of seasonal ingredients, with menus showcasing the traditional Italian format starting with antipasti, followed by a first course, pasta, main course and finishing with dessert. Typically you might opt for crispy pig's trotter, lentils, salsa verde and young leeks before a pasta dish of smoked eel tortellini in brodo. Main courses offer Challans duck, sugar snap peas and fresh herbs or for fish fans there's Cornish turbot, green and yellow beans with anchovy butter. Desserts and cheeses are displayed on a table at the end of the room along the lines of chocolate, mascarpone and coffee ice cream or wild strawberry granita and fennel ice cream.
Accompanying the menu is a well conceived wine list garnered from all corners of the world, together with an 'Auction List' of fine wines and rare bottles which will be of particular interest to wine connoisseurs.
