Review on Vanderlyle

Just 15 months after the closure of his award-winning The Hole in the Wall in Little Wilbraham, MasterChef finalist Alex Rushmer together with his sous-chef Lawrence Butler have embarked on a new venture with the opening of Vanderlyle in April 2019. Located on cosmopolitan Mill Road, a short walk from the city centre of Cambridge, the restaurant takes its name from a made up word by the The National, an American rock band from Cincinnati, Ohio.

Occupying a former Subway shop, the interiors are simple and uncluttered with an open kitchen, but it's the skilfully prepared food that really grabs the attention. They present a five course tasting menu that mainly highlights vegetables, working directly with trusted farmers and producers, the menu changes daily driven by the very best of ingredients available that morning.

Typical of some of the dishes that have appeared on the carte include the likes of shiitake mushrooms, darjeeling and brown butter potato rosti, roscoff soubise, mushroom and thyme jus, as well as roasted aubergine, sesame and miso bagna cauda, black olive caramel, mushroom jus and jersey royals. When it comes to desserts you might see baked vanilla cheesecake with pickled cherries, malted chocolate crumble and frozen yogurt or orange and carrot cake, frozen rhubarb and ginger meringue and carrot curd.

The dishes can be paired with wine and there's also an option of non-alcoholic drinks to complement the dishes.
