Review on Les Platanes
Les Platanes is a contemporary French restaurant which opened its doors in May 2019, located in an elegant nineteenth century townhouse on Bruton Place, a small cobbled street behind Berkeley Square in the heart of Mayfair. A charming bistro de luxe which takes its name from the plane trees that line the lanes of Provence and nearby Berkeley Square, it's the brainchild of chef Thierry Laborde and Operations Director Anton Efimov. Thierry has honed his craft in several stellar kitchens including L'Oranger where he earned a Michelin star in 2004, before he went on to open Chabrot Bistrot d'Amis in Knightsbridge in 2011, and Anton has previously worked at Mari Vanna UK and Raffles Townhouse.
The dining room looks eminently chic in a palette of pale cream, contrasting with teal blue banquettes set against tables laid with crisp white linen. Walls are adorned with mirrors and nineteenth and twentieth century artwork. It's a fitting setting for Thierry's menu that takes inspiration from the South West of France. Diners can look forward to dishes like white asparagus, egg mimosa and vinaigrette, as well as a warm native lobster salad with fennel and fresh peaches. Les plats principaux include the likes of lamb chops from Quercy, purple aubergine and pine kernels or from the sea Cornish turbot and artichoke barigoule. Desserts stay close to home witness an apple tatin or tarte au chocolate, or if you prefer to finish on a savoury note opt for the French farmhouse cheeses from Beillevaire.
The wine list flies the tricolore featuring over 130 bins which includes some lesser known bottles from independent producers.
