Review on Fitzroy
Fitzroy is the new venture from David Gingell and Jeremie Cometto, who are the team behind successful restaurants Westerns Laundry, Primeur and Jolene. They have headed out of London for their fourth restaurant, to the quaint fishing town of Fowey in south Cornwall, a county where David grew up.
Named after the shipping forecast area, it's set in a former Victorian bank that has stood empty for eight years on the corner of Fore Street and Webb Street. The two-storey building has been decorated by Cometto in a minimalist style reminiscent of the Shaker movement, and he has made excellent use of local craftsmen for the oak furniture. The main dining room is on the ground floor, while the first floor is home to the private dining room encased in the wine cellar, overlooking the open kitchen and restaurant.
The kitchen makes the most of the local larder on its doorstep and menus change daily to reflect this, appearing in the shape of small and large plates designed for sharing. Expect to see dishes along the lines of curried cauliflower, almonds and raisins or half a duck, mustard and cabbage or for those with a preference for fish, there's fried monkfish and tartare sauce or maybe whole mackerel celery, fennel and lardo. Bringing up the rear are desserts like chocolate mousse and peanut caramel or a refreshing summer berry granita.
The wine list is a well-sourced slate and there's also locally brewed beers and ciders on draft, together with a selection of house made vermouths and soft selzers
