Review on The Oval Restaurant at The Wellesley
Named after Sir Arthur Wellesley, the first Duke of Wellington, The Wellesley is a beautifully restored 1920's townhouse in upmarket Knightsbridge, now one of London's most luxurious boutique hotels, it's just a stone's throw from Hyde Park Corner Tube Station. The hotel's showpiece is their Oval Restaurant, a stunning Art Deco room decked out in a palette of cream with gold accents and pale pink leather chairs, featuring lustrous marble and a magnificent glittering chandelier taking centre stage.
Seating just 22 diners, the kitchen pays homage to Italian cuisine under Executive Chef Sebastiano Cioffi, using the freshest ingredients for dishes that are artistically presented. Enjoy Cornish crab salad, black rice, aioli and seaweeds before moving on to a main course of suckling pig, artichokes and quince or Dover sole, crispy asparagus, wild mushrooms and lemon verbena sauce. Completing the picture are desserts like After Eight chocolate fondant, mint and chocolate ice cream or triple chocolate bavarois served with mandarin sorbet.
Accompany the menu is a vast and well conceived wine list. The Wellesley also has a Cigar Humidor housing Europe's largest selection of cigars, and look out for their popular live music sessions in its 1920's-style Jazz Lounge.
