Review on Restaurant 88 at Grantley Hall
It is appropriate that the stunning Grantley Hall, a luxury hotel and wellness retreat in North Yorkshire should have Restaurant 88, a pan-Asian eatery among it's trio of restaurants, given that it has an English Heritage listed Japanese garden amongst its glorious 38 landscaped acres. Located in a separate purpose-built pavilion in the gardens, the bar on the ground floor and the basement dining room oozes glamour and style. Luxurious teal coloured curved fluted banquette seating and intimate booths are complimented by gold and dark wood accents, amid lovely displays of exotic orchids. Enjoy a pre-dinner cocktail on the stylish outside terrace, complete with fire burners should the weather be a little chilly.
Holding sway in the kitchen is Ben Iley, who has previously worked in well regarded restaurants in Tokyo, but more recently was Head Chef at the Ox Club in Headrow House, Leeds. Fusing the very best of Yorkshire produce with far Eastern flavours, Ben tantalises the taste buds of the most discerning palette with his inventive dishes. Opt for the eight course tasting menu and among the delights on offer you might find seabream poke, diced cured seabream dressed in yuzu oil, kumquat and melon radish or tea smoked tea trout, fillet of sea trout, sake and shiso butter sauce, morning glory and squid ink tuille. Meat eaters will also enjoy dishes in the shape of smoked venison tataki, seared wild venison, charred onion, ponzu and buckwheat or Peking duck breast, seven spice Yorkshire duck breast with pak choi, nashi pear, duck wontons and cherry sauce. To complete the picture there's desserts like lychee and shiso sorbet with matcha crumb or the lucky peach, peach compote and yuzu cream.
Restaurant 88 has a carefully curated wine list to complement the food, together with well-crafted signature cocktails.
