Review on Loyal Tavern
Formerly known as Bermondsey institute Village East, September 2019 saw it relaunch as the Loyal Tavern, the debut restaurant from former Duck & Waffle Executive Chef, Tom Cenci together with Adam White from the House Café Company, who also operates Rail House Café in Victoria and Riding House Café in Fitzrovia. The name is a nod to the locals that have remained loyal to the neighbourhood restaurant throughout the years. The venue offers guests a variety of seating areas, decked out with warm rustic wood furnishings and featuring à la mode overhead industrial steel fittings.
The dishes have been carefully designed to reflect the seasonality of fresh British produce and a list of their trusted suppliers are displayed on their menu. Among the snacks on offer you might see chicken skin crackling, hot sauce and blue cheese dressing before moving on to charred mackerel, apple, pine nuts and salt block. When it comes to large plates there's a hearty dish of slow-cooked pig cheeks, fresh black pudding and suet dumplings or from the sea gurnard, crab bisque, carrot, orange and seaweed. Coal-roasted pineapple paired with malted banana ice cream or a double chocolate brownie with vanilla ice cream makes a good finale.
There's an extensive wine list of natural, New World, British and International wines, together with cocktails like Right on Thyme, Champagne, thyme-infused Lillet Blanc, coconut and lemon and elegant sharing punch bowls serving four curated by Antonio Del Monte, formerly of The Ned.
