Review on Julie's Restaurant
Just in time to celebrate its 50th Anniversary, the iconic Julie's Restaurant relaunched in September 2019, after a closure of four years. The multi-million pound refurbishment was undertaken by its original owner, interior designer Julie Hodgess, who back in 1969 transformed the Holland Park's builder's yard into a restaurant that became a popular haunt for A-list celebrities and royalty. She sold the restaurant in 1972 to the current owners, Tim Herring and his wife Cathy.
Featuring a series of intimate rooms, much of the original Bohemian décor has been retained including the lovely stained-glass windows and Gothic wood carvings, as well as their infamous table in a curtained-off alcove that became known as the 'G-spot'. There's colourful cushioned banquette seating and furnishings upholstered in detailed Pakistani kilim tapestry, with the addition of a new Champagne Bar.
There's a Michelin starred chef in the kitchen, with former Goring Chef Shay Cooper taking the reins, and his chef de partie is Tim and Cathy's grandson Ralph Herring. Modern British dishes are the order of the day with cured sea trout, Isle of Wight tomatoes, ginger and seaweed dressing or maybe Hereford beef tartare, spiced shallots, French beans, nasturtium and onion amongst the starters. When it comes to the main event you might see Ox cheek, smoked cauliflower, veal tongue, green pepper and cucumber relish or from the sea roast Cornish cod, cuttlefish, bacon, chicken and mushroom dressing. There's some interesting desserts to round off proceedings with a fig leaf panna cotta, fig preserve and Earl Grey doughnuts or vanilla rice pudding, greengages and lemon thyme ice cream.
The excellent wine list looks to Europe for inspiration and there's lots of lovely options available by the glass. There's also a carefully crafted selection of cocktails like Spitfire, Cognac, Crème de Peche, white wine, lemon and egg white, together with fine English beers from Nine Reigns.
