Review on Allium at Askham Hall
The award-winning Askham Hall is situated in the tranquil and picturesque village of Askham on the north-eastern edge of the beautiful Lake District National Park, just 10 minutes drive from the M6. Owned by the Lowther family since the 1800's, the Grade I-listed manor house with a 12th-century peel tower, can trace its history back to the 13th century before it was turned into a boutique hotel in 2012.
They relaunched their restaurant in the Spring of 2018, naming it Allium after the beautiful purple allium flowers that grow in abundance in their 12 acres of stunning Grade II gardens. Leading the kitchen is chef Richard Swale, whose resumé includes working with esteemed chefs such as John Burton Race and Anthony Demetre in London and French chef Marc Veyrat in Annecy. Making the most of local produce grown in the 800 year old Lowther Estate, top-class innovative cooking has earned Richard a number of plaudits, including three AA Rosettes and a prestigious Michelin star.
Open proceedings with mackerel tartare, elderflower, pickled razor clam, cucumber and horseradish or from the land, local roe deer, celeriac, damson, radish and hazelnut. Moving on to the main event of grilled halibut, café de Paris butter, brown shrimps and garden vegetables or for those with a preference for meat, Shorthorn beef fillet, smoked shallot, Pommes Anna potatoes, salsify and red wine sauce. Proceedings conclude in style with Askham discovery apple and pecan cake served with cinnamon ice cream or exotic fruit, wafer biscuit, yuzu vinegar, passion fruit sorbet and coconut foam.
To complement the dishes there's an excellent wine list and should you wish to extend your stay and explore this lovely area further, Askham Hall has 19 stylishly decorated bedrooms.
