Betony by Matt Tomkinson is the fine dining restaurant set within The Kings Head, located in the picturesque South Wiltshire village of Whiteparish on the edge of the New Forest, it's just eight miles from historic Salisbury. After a closure of five years, new owners have undertaken a sympathetic restoration and refurbishment of the 16th century coaching house and it was re-opened in 2017.

Chef patron of Betony is former 2005 Roux Scholar and Great British Chef Matthew Tomkinson, whose cooking has achieved a number of accolades over the years including a prestigious Michelin star at the The Goose in Britwell Salome and The Terrace Restaurant at the Montague Arms in Beulieu.

Making the most of the abundance of the local larder, Matthew presents a six course tasting menu as well as an a la carte option. Open the slate with grilled plaice fillets, lightly braised sweetheart cabbage and smoked salmon and caviar velouté or maybe beetroot risotto, creamed horseradish, fennel salad, pickled beetroot and crispy wild rice. When it comes to main courses, you might be tempted by beer braised Wiltshire beef, caramelised onions, smoked potatoes and crispy shallots or from the sea Cornish cod, sauté black pudding, romesco sauce, grilled broccoli and toasted almonds. As for desserts, think stem ginger panna cotta, poached English rhubarb and rhubarb sorbet or a classic vanilla creme brûlée with macerated blackberries and honeycomb.

The Kings Head is at the very heart of the local community and guests are assured of a very warm welcome if only popping in for a leisurely drink. The pub also offers more casual dining serving traditional favourites like fish and chips and wild boar sausages and mash. There's luxury accommodation in the beautifully converted barn overlooking the 1.5 acre garden, should you wish to linger longer.
