Review on The Fishmarket
The Fishmarket is a partnership between Roy Brett of the well regarded Ondine Restaurant in Edinburgh, together with his long time colleague Gary Welch, who runs his wholesale and retail operation from Newhaven harbour. The restaurant is located on Newhaven pier in a refurbished turn of the century Victorian building, once the premises where Welch Fishmongers filleted their fish. The Fishmarket was delighted to pick up The Scotsman Food and Drink Award for Best Newcomer in 2018, as well as appearing in the BBC's television show, Most Remarkable Places to Eat.
The venue is divided into two, with the fish and chip counter for takeaways on one side, leading into the restaurant and bar area. It's light and airy with a lofty ceiling featuring exposed piping and ventilation units, walls are decorated with a mix of glossy green and white tiles and taking centre stage is the whale of Newhaven mural created by Ondine's Assistant Manager, Francesca Pulixa. Floor to ceiling windows open out onto the raised deck area, which is very popular during summer months for al fresco dining, but stunning views are also available in the dining room overlooking the sea to Fife, the lighthouse and the Forth Bridges.
Spearheading the kitchen is former Ondine Head Chef Ishu Mehrotra, who makes excellent use of the ultra-fresh fish that arrives at the harbour and is processed next door by Welch Fishmongers. Crispy squid with Vietnamese sauce or smoked haddock chowder makes a good starting point, before moving on to the main event of monkfish curry and basmati rice or maybe grilled halibut served with new potatoes, tenderstem broccoli and lemon dressing. Desserts are simple affairs such as lemon posset or a chocolate fudge brownie.
The concise wine list naturally majors in white wine to accompany the fish dishes, with the vast majority available by the glass, and there's also well executed cocktails on offer.
