Review on Vardo

The popular Caravan group of restaurants have pitched camp in Chelsea with their new venture, named Vardo after the wagons used by Romani travellers in the 1800's. Set within a striking cylindrical, three-storey stone and glass pavilion commissioned by the Cadogan Estate and designed by London-based firm NEX Architecture, it nestles in the centre of the Duke of York Square.

Adjacent to the Saatchi Gallery on one side and King's Road on the other, it boasts fully retractable glass walls opening out onto a vast terrace. Inside it's a beautifully sculptured restaurant decked out in contemporary style in a palette of soft pink and pale green. There's pale wood furnishings and cosy booths broken up by lots of pretty greenery. The kitchens are in the basement and above the ground floor restaurant is a public roof garden that can be accessed by exterior steps.

The kitchen is open all day offering a crowd pleasing menu that spans the globe. Typical options include pork and Chinese chive potsticker dumplings, black vinegar, chilli oil, black sesame, followed by char-grilled pork ribeye, garlic, sage and lemon butter. For those with a preference for fish there's whole crispy fried sea bass, three flavour sauce, Thai herbs, lime and peanuts, alongside a selection of pizzas, grains and bowls and vegetable options. To finish there's slices and serves in the shape of dark chocolate and rye custard tart and blackberry cream or a vanilla bean soft serve with caramelized pineapple, toasted coconut and sesame seed praline.

The International wine menu has plenty of options available by the glass, there's beers on tap, house-made immune-boosting ferments and probiotic sodas, and the cocktail list is inspired by the Silk Road.
