Review on Littlefrench
Littlefrench in Westbury Park, Bristol is the debut restaurant from Freddie Bird, the former Director and Executive Head Chef of the Lido in Bristol, and the co-presenter of the Channel 4 series Hidden Restaurants alongside Michel Roux Jr.
A charming neighbourhood venue, the cosy interiors have been decorated by Freddie's wife Nessa, who is also in charge of front of house, where you are guaranteed a warm welcome with a personal touch. Colourful orange and teal banquettes and wooden chairs are set against simply laid tables. There's exposed brick walls, shelves lined with bottles of wine and greenery hanging from the light fittings. Nessa also designed all the crockery and ceramics for the restaurant which were hand thrown in Freddy's mum's studio.
Littlefrench has a daily changing menu with impeccable ingredients sourced from the finest producers from across Europe. Among the many tempting offerings on the carte you might see milk fed sweetbreads paired with sauce gribiche or from the sea roast queen scallops, sauternes butter and chives. Main courses usher in duck breast, Provenance black figs, cassis, fried potatoes and garlic rosemary or fish fans will enjoy the brill, leeks, bayonne ham and beurre rouge. Bringing down the curtain is a mousse au chocolate or prune and Armagnac tart served with Armagnac custard.
There's an interesting wine list with a focus on French wines that offers a varied selection by the glass.
