Review on 28°- 50° Covent Garden
Occupying a corner position on Upper St Martin's Lane and Shelton Street in the heart of Covent Garden, 28°- 50° opened a flagship restaurant in November 2019, having already established a branch in Marylebone. Set in the former premises of Cantina Laredo, the venue consists of three dining rooms, as well as an oenophiles wine bar and an extravagant champagne bar, accompanied by a killer soundtrack compiled by some of London's top DJs.
It looks eminently chic with a glamorous setting, featuring a stunning glass wine chandelier alongside vintage light fixtures. Luxurious baby pink and sky blue chairs are set against marble table tops, and when the weather is warm you also have the option of sitting on their terrace and watch the world go by.
Executive chef Julian Baris has created a modern European menu that reflects the very best of seasonal produce. The sharing charcuterie platter makes a good starting point with Serrano ham, chorizo, saucisson, cecina and morcon or maybe opt for the seared scallops, pumpkin pureé, pickled ginger and toasted pine nuts. Main courses pick up on the likes of seared tuna, Asian broth, bok choy, shitake mushroom, toasted peanut and coriander cress or from the land slow roasted lamb shoulder, quince, turnip and lamb broth. Amongst the desserts you might see tart tatin paired with vanilla crème fraiche or financier almond gateau served with roasted fig and yoghurt ice cream.
To accompany the food there's a first-class wine list that changes frequently, with options available by the bottle, carafe and glass, alongside well executed cocktails.
