Review on Church Road
A bastion of the south-west London dining scene for thirty-three years, Sonny's Kitchen in Barnes has been re-launched as Church Road by owner Rebecca Mascarenhas in partnership with Michelin starred chef, Phil Howard. Inside the interiors are inspired by the glamour of the 1950's with a lovely soft pink Venini-style chandelier, and smartly clothed tables set with comfy aubergine leather chairs. At the front of the restaurant is a marble topped bar, perfect for pre or post dinner cocktails made from seasonal nectars and syrups.
The kitchen is led by Sam Astley-Dean, who was previously the sous chef at Michelin-starred Elystan Street in Chelsea. Showcasing a seasonal menu of modern British dishes along the lines of tartare of aged Cumbrian beef with shaved mushrooms, parmesan and grilled sourdough or from the sea order the cured Loch Duart salmon with sweet mustard dressing, potato salad and apple. After that, consider whole chargrilled plaice with chanterelles, capers, brown butter and potato crisps or for meat lovers there's venison with red cabbage and a wrap of glazed shoulder, pickled pear and green peppercorns. To conclude a scorched bitter chocolate cake with mocha cream and crème Chantilly or a tarte fine of Braeburn apples with bay leaf ice cream and spices round things off in style.
There's a well thought out wine list to accompany the dishes and a bar snack menu that changes frequently.
