Review on Plate Restaurant
Plate restaurant is set on the first floor of the M by Montcalm Shoreditch Tech City hotel, just a few minutes walk from Old Street tube. Chef patron is Arnaud Stevens, a talented classically trained chef who has worked with lauded chefs such as Gordon Ramsay, Jason Atherton, Gary Rhodes and Richard Corrigan.
Occupying the first floor of the hotel with its distinctive diagonal shapes, the restaurant has a chic style with an open kitchen to the rear. Bathed in light from the full length glass windows that take in views of the hustle and bustle of City Road, it is situated opposite Moorfields Eye Hospital. The open plan venue is decorated in a palette of blue and orange in an inviting but minimalist style with well spaced marble-topped tables. On the ground floor is Plate Bake, an all day eatery and artisanal bakery serving delicious homemade cakes, pastries and breads, alongside an a la carte breakfast and in the evening it's perfect for a relaxing glass of wine from their extensive wine list or an impeccably made cocktail.
Arnaud has appointed Executive Chef Matt Hill to lead the kitchen brigade, formerly of SixtyOne and Executive Chef of country house hotel Down Hall. Presenting a British menu with French influences that rotates with the seasons, you might see amongst the starters pork, pistachio and pancetta terrine served with spiced rhubarb chutney and Plate brioche loaf before a main course of salted Atlantic cod, smoked celeriac and mussel sauce, braised chicory and hazelnut. Finely executed desserts close the show with pumpkin tart, spiced pecan crumble and ginger ice cream, or a dark chocolate delice paired with crème fraiche and lime.
