Review on Roux at Skindles
Michel Roux Snr OBE and his son Alain are the esteemed chefs and restaurateurs behind Roux at Skindles, located at the entrance to the prestigious Berkeley Homes' Taplow Riverside development, it offers diners a more casual version to their lauded Waterside Inn in Bray, just a few miles upriver. It stands on the site of the legendary Skindles Hotel on the east side of the Thames adjacent to the Maidenhead Bridge, when its guests included the likes of Winston Churchill and Princess Margaret.
Skindles occupies a smart three-storey yellow bricked building with a chic contemporary brasserie on the ground floor featuring an open kitchen. Floor to ceiling glass windows afford stunning views of the Thames and an outside terrace is the perfect spot for al fresco dining. The first floor also has a balcony and this is where the cocktail bar is situated, with it's glowing copper bar serving cocktails for every mood and occasion, as well as craft beers. Private dining in the Chairman's Room is available on the second floor.
Leading the kitchen team is Mauritian born Head Chef Rajkumar Holuss, who previously worked at The Waterside Inn as First Sous Chef for eight years. Serving French brasserie dishes which emphasise impeccably fresh seasonal produce, dishes are presented with artistic flair. Among the starters look for goat's cheese soufflé and tomato coulis before moving on to a main course of pan fried hake with coco beans ragout and broccoli, saffron sauce. Desserts are worth saving room for witness a Chantilly choux bun paired with vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce or lemon meringue tart with raspberry sorbet.
The ambience is relaxed and friendly and to accompany the food there's a wine list that majors in French wines, with options available by the glass.
