Review on Gunmakers
The Gunmakers pub which has been closed for over a year has been given a new lease of life by renowned sommelier and restaurateur, Xavier Rousset and chef Mark Jarvis, who won Cateys Newcomer Award 2017 for his Anglo Restaurant which he opened in 2016. The pair originally worked together at Michelin-starred Texture restaurant in Marylebone.
Said to be a favourite haunt of Winston Churchill, the traditional 300 year old Marylebone pub is laid out over two floors. Operating has a pub on the ground floor, the main dining room is located in the basement featuring red leather banquettes and wooden tables set on a black and white tiled floor and green panelled walls adorned with period photos and shooting memorabilia. There's also two bar stools set at the counter with views through the window to the kitchen.
Showcasing a British menu reflecting the best of seasonal produce you might start with game terrine paired with cranberry compote and pickled onions or from the sea, there's mussels cooked in beer, garlic, mustard and tarragon. Main courses pick up on 120g English Wagyu bavette served with potato rostï and watercress, as well as fillet of seabass with creamed leeks, dill and capers. To round things off enjoy a sticky toffee pudding or maybe the Earl Grey crème brûlée.
It goes without saying that Xavier Rousset has compiled an excellent wine list to accompany the food.
