Review on The Owl
The Owl is the first pub to be launched in Leeds Kirkgate Market, the largest covered market in Europe dating back to 1875. It's the second venue from MasterChef 2016 semi-finalist Elizabeth Cottam and Mark Owens, the former head chef of the Michelin-starred Box Tree in Ilkley, West Yorkshire, who already operate the popular Home Restaurant on Kirkgate in Leeds. The Owl can be found on Fish & Game Row, alongside Butcher's Row, the oldest part of the ornate market building. Named after the stone-carved owls in the market's roof arches, the moodily lit interiors are pared back with traditional table and chairs, with further seating at the bar overlooking the open kitchen.
Serving honest, robust cooking celebrating pub classics, the dishes are carefully executed using produce from small farmers, independent traders, as well as the neighbouring stall holders within the market. Expect the likes of king scallop and parsnip soup served with crusty bread and butter before a main course of game wellington paired with mash, veg and gravy. To finish enjoy favourites like sticky toffee pudding with ice cream and toffee sauce or an individual cherry and apple crumble and vanilla custard.
To accompany the food there's fine wines on tap and local craft beers from Northern Monk including Wisdom, a new beer brewed especially for The Owl.
