Review on Bank House
Bank House wine bar and kitchen is a gem of a neighbourhood addition to Chislehurst High Street, just a 20 minute train ride from London, it's known for its surrounding commons and National Trust-owned land. It's the brain child of chef Stuart Gillies former CEO for the Gordon Ramsay group, together with his wife Cecilia, an experienced front-of-house personnel whose CV includes restaurants such as Quo Vadis and Marco Pierre White's Criterion.
Located in a former National Westminster Bank, the Victorian brownstone building has been completely renovated and lovingly restored. Set over three floors with the original vault now home to the wine cellar, there's a ground floor hardwood and aged copper bar, with the main dining room on the first floor featuring a modern fireplace and an open wood beamed ceiling. Decked out in a stylish contemporary style with oak parquet flooring and exposed brickwork, vibrant arty canvases decorate the walls.
Taking the reins of the kitchen is Bobby Brown, who joins Bank House from The Kentish Hare in Bidborough having worked in esteemed kitchens such as Gordon Ramsay's Bread Street Kitchen and Age & Sons in Ramsgate. He serves a modern European menu of small plates designed for sharing with produce sourced from local farms, as well as trusted artisan suppliers. Among the carnivorous options expect the likes of buttermilk chicken, BBQ sauce, blue cheese and spring onion or warm pork belly sliders, cheese and pickled slaw. From the sea there's baked crab gratin, crostini and parmesan or maybe plaice fillet, beetroot and parmesan. To finish indulge in a Bakewell tart paired with clotted cream or a flourless chocolate cake with Chantilly.
Angelika Oparczyk, who was previously a sommelier and wine manager for Gordon Ramsay Restaurants has curated the wine list featuring natural and bio dynamic vintners, with a lovely selection available by the glass. Elsewhere there's craft beers and a range of cocktails on tap.
