Review on The Small Holding
The Small Holding nestles in the hamlet of Kilndown five miles west of Cranbrook in Kent, and just a few minutes drive from Bedgebury Pinetum and the National Trust's beautiful Scotney Castle. The former run down Globe and Rainbow pub has been given a new lease of life by brothers Will and Matt Devlin. Will who was Head Chef at the Windmill in Hollingbourne for over seven years and before that a sous chef in Michelin-starred Thackeray's in Tunbridge Wells, has recently picked up the 2020 'chef to watch' by The Waitrose Good Food Guide. It is just one of the awards to be won by the restaurant including, Kent Restaurant of the Year Taste of Kent Awards 2019, listed in Harden's 100 Top UK Restaurant 2020, as well as receiving two prestigious AA Rosettes.
Surrounded by one acre of glorious countryside, they grow most of the produce on their on-site farm, as well as rearing rare Berkshire pigs, hens and geese. The restaurant and bar has a cosy vibe with mismatched chairs set against country style tables on wooden floorboards and pale blue walls decorated with old farm implements. On sunny days the decked terrace is a lovely place to sit with a drink, overlooking the farm and views of the Weald of Kent.
At lunch the kitchen offers the half an acre tasting menu featuring six courses and in the evenings the full acre showcases ten delicious courses. Matt is in charge of the drinks side of the restaurant and can pair your dishes with either wine or craft beer options. The wine list champions both old and new world wines sourced from leading independent vintners, as well as their exclusive Squerryes 2013 English sparkling, there's real ales and rotating craft beers on tap.
