Review on Ampéli
Greek and Eastern Mediterranean restaurant Ampéli was launched in January 2019 on Charlotte Street in the heart of Fitzrovia. A wine-focused restaurant whose name means vineyard in Greek, it's the first solo project from Athens born photographer Jenny Pagoni.
Decked out in a palette of light green referencing the olive groves of Greece, it's laid out over three floors, with a ground floor bar, an upstairs mezzanine area flooded with natural light from the skylights and a downstairs intimate dining room. Walls are decorated with works from enterprising artists such as acclaimed watercolourist, Leonie de Lange and sculptor Vasiliki Maliopoulou, who crafts works from reclaimed materials found along the Greek coastline.
Head chef Oren Goldfeld, who previously worked at Ottolenghi's Nopi and Tel Aviv's acclaimed restaurant Toto has worked closely with Jenny to showcase some of her favourite Greek dishes, which guests are encouraged to share over a glass of wine. Graze your way through the likes of Jewish chopped chicken liver, caper leaves and cornichons or salt cod croquettes, samphire and yoghurt tartar. Among the large plates there's whole grilled Cornish mackerel, Jerusalem artichokes and vine leaves or maybe grilled lamb chops with Baharat and skordalia, red onion and herb salad. Bringing up the rear are desserts such as chocolate Mahlab mousse, hazelnuts, glacé pomelo and crème fraîche or semolina cake with cardamom syrup, pistachios, caramelised pumpkin and yoghurt mousse.
The indigenous wine list has been curated by Greek Master of Wine and 2019 judge of the Decanter Wine Awards, Yiannis Karakasis featuring wines from Greece and the surrounding area, including a selection of natural and low intervention wine, with plenty of options available by the bottle, carafe and glass. There's also classic native spirits such as Ouzo, Raki and Mastica, as well as barrel-aged Tsipouro.
