Review on Dastaan
The denizens of Ewell in the suburbs of Surrey certainly appreciate having the multi-award winning Indian restaurant Dastaan on their doorstep. Set on an unassuming parade of shops just off the dual-carriage way, it's just a 6-minute drive from Tolworth Rail Station, and takes its name from the Indian word meaning story.
Dastaan is owned by two highly accomplished chefs Sanjay Gour and Nand Kishor, who both previously held the position of Head Chef at the critically acclaimed Michelin-starred restaurant Gymkhana in Mayfair. Inside it has a casual vibe with an open kitchen and turmeric-yellow coloured walls and decorative tiling. Tables are simply laid and set against colourful banquette seating.
The menu showcases the rich tapestry of the sub-continent serving authentic regional dishes with an innovative and modern twist. Typical offerings on the carte include chicken lollypop chilli, garlic and tomato chutney and their popular lamb chops kasundi mustard mooli. For those with a preference for fish there's dishes such as fish and pink prawns amritsari dill and ginger raita or monk fish sonfiya fennel and cucumber salad, mint chutney and pine nuts.
To accompany the food there's a carefully compiled wine list with options available by the glass, together with Curious Brew and Cobra lager, Kingfisher beer and Luscombe cider.
Dastaan is also featured in: Michelin Guide, Hardens, AA Guide
