Review on 1921 Angel Hill
The multi-award winning 1921 restaurant is set in an ancient timber-framed building, located in the heart of the historic market town of Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk. Chef patron is Zack Deakins, who has worked his way through top restaurants such as Michelin-starred Martin Wishart in Edinburgh, as well as holding the position of Head Chef at the Le Talbooth in Dedham and the Bildeston Crown.
The interiors have been updated and are both fashionable and rustic, integrating a modern design to complement the building's history. The dining room is cosy and welcoming, with a wall display of old books and decorative knick-knacks giving it a homely touch. A large glittering chandelier is a focal point and the walls are adorned with local artwork.
Guests are invited to choose from a selection of delicious canapés such as cured cod, avocado and wasabi, alongside an aperitif in the lounge whilst perusing the menu. Zack is passionate about the native larder and works closely with trusted suppliers for the finest seasonal produce. Diners can look forward to inventive cuisine that showcases both culinary flair and attention to detail, resulting in both flavoursome and artistically displayed dishes.
Start proceedings with rillette of Gressingham duck leg, liver parfait, plum and almond or from the sea there's Mersea crab, wasabi pickled mooli, green apple and avocado. Main courses usher in the likes of 40 day aged sirloin of Suffolk beef, ox tongue, kohlrabi and pickled mustard seeds or halibut, choucroute, snails, garlic and parsley. Desserts offer temptation with a crème caramel, pear, walnut and Sauternes or egg custard tart paired with apple and blackberry.
Service is exemplary, both friendly and precise, while the excellent wine list is an international slate with plenty of options available by the glass.
