Review on Marcliffe Hotel & Spa
Opened by one-time Soviet Premier Mikhail Gorbachev in 1993, the family-run Marcliffe has established a gilt-edged international reputation and picked up a clutch of prestigious accolades over the years. It stands in 11 acres of attractive wooded grounds on the western outskirts of Aberdeen and is ideal for business or leisure.
Meals are served in the airy, split-level Conservatory Restaurant with its Lloyd Loom chairs and specially spun curtains. Native produce figures strongly on the menu: crispy organic cod comes with summer pea fricassee while char-grilled fillet and slow-roast belly of Oldmeldrum pork are served with artichoke purée, wild mushrooms and broad beans. There's also a full 'surf and turf' menu featuring prime Aberdeen Angus steaks and lobster.
The wine list is an awesome 400-bin collection of the great, the good and the eminently drinkable, with house wines by the glass dispensed in perfect condition thanks to a 'verre du vin' preservation system. Whisky fans also have a superb choice of more than 100 malts.
