Review on Royal Thai

Aberdeen’s longest-serving Thai restaurant is still holding its own in the city, thanks to its stunning décor and wide-ranging menu of authentic dishes.

An extensive list of appetisers includes not only satays, fishcakes and marinated spare ribs, but also pau pia gluay (deep-fried taro and prawn rolls) and steamed scallops with yellow bean sauce.

Following on are soups and salads (including green mango with cashews and squid, as well as banana blossom with shredded chicken), plus the expected assortment of stir-fries, curries and noodle dishes. Also look for lobster tails in sweet tamarind sauce, poo pad kra prao krob (soft-shell crab with chilli and garlic on fried basil leaves) and Chiang Mai-style beef with tomatoes and curry leaves.

The menu also has a few immigrants from faraway lands, in the shape of duckling Armagnac, chicken meunière with fresh lime sauce and Royal Thai fajitas. A few vegetarian options are also available.
