Review on Homage Grand Salon, The Waldorf Hilton
The brainchild of flamboyant hospitality entrepreneur Roy Ackerman, Homage is an ambitious addition to the gold-star Waldorf Hilton (which celebrated its centenary in 2008). It comprises three venues in one vast, all-day space and tips its hat to the grand cafés that were once a seminal feature of Europe's great cities.
Pride of place goes to the Grand Salon, a magnificent room with a majestic 'double-height' ceiling, charcoal leather seating and a collection of ten modern artworks, each wrapped around a gilt column. The kitchen echoes the mood, with a menu of European classics along the lines of foie gras and chicken liver parfait with Cabernet Sauvignon jus and brioche, gigot of lamb with French beans or roast Scottish lobster with garlic butter. To conclude, expect chocolate fondant with Valrhona chocolate sauce, raspberry crème brûlée or rhubarb fool with Arnhem biscuits.
The adjacent Pâtisserie is a more intimate affair with dinky sofas, pretty Art Deco lighting and a jewel-box display of goodies: it's an ideal spot for morning coffee with homemade Viennoiserie or an afternoon repast accompanied by single-estate teas. Alternatively, relax in the Homage Bar with a cocktail and a plate of charcuterie.
