Review on Lovelady Shield Country House Hotel
There’s a genteel, unspoilt feel to this elegant Georgian country house built on the site of a thirteenth-century convent by the banks of the River Nent. Three acres of carefully tended grounds surround the hotel, and there are delightful views and inspiring walks all around â€" if you are tempted to venture into the great outdoors.
Orders are taken in the drawing room â€" often warmed by a roaring fire â€" and dinner menus vary from day to day. Chef Tom Orton works to an ever-changing repertoire that might be typified by Orkney crab mousse with cucumber and chive salad, loin of local lamb with a sauce of pan juices, redcurrants and mint, followed by bread-and-butter pudding or warm rice pudding topped with a glazed kiwi fruit.
Lunch is served on the first Sunday of each month and the wine list is a well-chosen slate running to some 100 bins.
