Review on Gilbey's
Gilbey's, situated in the heart of Old Amersham, is housed in a quaint building that was formerly a 17th century grammar school and has the church as its backdrop. Owned by Michael, Lin, Bill & Caroline Gilbey this is the sister restaurant to Gilbey's Restaurant in Eton. The restaurant is small but elegant, creating an intimate ambience and the exposed brick work and tasteful décor add to its charm. There is also a fabulous garden and a private dining room for up to 12 people.
Gilbey's offers a regularly changing seasonal menu that includes an eclectic blend of modern cuisine as well as classic desserts. There is a very reasonable set menu at 17.50 for 2 courses or 23.00 for 3 courses Monday â€" Saturday lunchtime and Sunday â€" Thursday evenings. One may start with roast breast of pigeon, Parma ham & warmed honeyed fig with walnut & bulgar wheat or oak-smoked trout frisee, bacon & Cox's apple salad with horseradish cream. This may be followed by roasted breast & leg of pheasant with baby onions & bacon and sweetcorn risotto. Desserts include Gilbey's lemon tart with pistachio ice cream and blackberry parfait with roasted pear puree and lemon madeleines.
The wines are competitively priced and imported by Tom Gilbey of The Vintner, Michael's nephew and Bill's son. Michael works closely with Tom and has personally sourced and selected many of these wines.
