Review on Fairfield House Hotel, Martins Bar & Grill
Standing proudly on the Ayrshire coast with wonderful views over the Firth of Clyde to the Isle of Arran, this impressive Victorian mansion (once home to a wealthy Glasgow tea merchant) has recently benefited from a major top-to-toe refurbishment.
On the food front, the focus of attention is the stylishly designed Martins Bar and Grill, which won Best Informal Dining Restaurant 2006 at the Scottish Hotel of the Year Awards. In summer you can also soak up the views and eat al fresco on the terrace.
A new lunch menu has been introduced of late, with lots of flexible options ranging from speciality sandwiches and burgers with fries to crab cakes with red pepper aïoli and duck pie. The three-course deal is a snip for around £7. The wine list comes courtesy of Corney & Barrow's underground cellars in Academy Street, Ayr.
