The location, in 16 acres of grounds on the edge of Snowdonia National Park, is a big plus, likewise the stunning interiors with their lofty vaulted ceilings and galleried oak staircase. It makes a sumptuous setting for classic country hotel cooking with a European accent.

Ham hock and foie gras terrine with red onion marmalade is a typical starter, alongside smoked duck and vegetable broth. Among main courses, you can expect things like seared monkfish wrapped in Parma ham and spinach with saffron and asparagus risotto or loin of local lamb crumbed with mustard and rosemary and served with haggis-scented crushed potatoes, braised Puy lentils and port and redcurrant jus. As a finale, choose between peppermint tea crème brûlée and warm chocolate fondant with cinnamon ice cream.
