Review on Honey & Spice Restaurant, Sygun Fawr Country House
It's worth making the trek along the narrow stone-flanked road that winds its way from Beddgelert up to this secluded retreat. Sygun Fawr is a seventeenth-century manor house built into a mountainous hillside, and it comes complete with a full quota of thick stone walls, low oak beams and huge inglenooks.
Dinner is served in the oldest part of the building - or you can eat in the modern conservatory overlooking the garden. Either way, don't expect frills and fuss, just honest cooking based on sound Welsh ingredients. A typical four-course menu might kick off with local goats' cheese and red onion tart before slow-braised shoulder of Snowdonia lamb on minted mash with redcurrant glaze, venison in claret or pork loin with cracked peppercorn and apple risotto. Then come desserts (perhaps apple and caramel cream pie), and finally cheeses from the Welsh dresser.
Sygun Fawr caters principally for residents - others must book in advance. Also note that on Monday and Thursday nights, the full menu is replaced by a light supper.
