Review on Devonshire Arms
Part of the Duke Devonshire's stable, this revitalised eighteenth-century stone inn stands right at the heart of Chatsworth Estate. Built as a row of cottages, it has been catapulted into the twenty-first century, with bold colours, funky furnishings and vivid design features (including a glass-fronted wine store) setting just the right mood in the brasserie.
The menu follows suit, offering an upbeat choice of dishes with an Anglo-European slant: expect robust offerings like fillet of beef with white asparagus, peas, ox tongue and truffle sauce or organic sea trout with crushed Jersey Royals, spring greens and caviar sauce. There's also a selection of 'classics' (cod and chips, bangers and mash, ploughman's with pork pie) plus a choice of sweets running from lemon tart (courtesy of chef's mum) to coconut cream with mango and kiwi.
By contrast, the original bar flaunts its traditional credentials with original beams, a copper-topped bar and real ales on handpump. Light dishes are served from 12.00 - 6.00pm (toasted sandwiches, pasta, burgers and the like). A 'Big Table' is set up in an alcove off the bar for those who fancy a family get-together or business bash.
