Review on Mariners Bar & Restaurant
Tucked away on one of Bideford's narrow cobbled streets, a short walk from the quay, Mariners Bar & Restaurant, formerly known as Lathwells, ticks all the necessary boxes as an enthusiastically run neighbourhood restaurant. Owner John Emms is keen on local produce (fish is from the Bideford boats, vegetables are grown by gardeners in the town), he updates his menus regularly and serves his customers' needs admirably (he will even arrange taxis from the door).
'Glorious,' was one Mobile Food Guide reporter's verdict on the food - especially the crab, lobster and prawn bisque and the slow-cooked beef served with horseradish mash, bacon, mushroom and ale gravy. Other highlights might include warm salad of pigeon breast with marinated tomato dressing, herb-crusted fillet of cod and chicken breast stuffed with Brie and spinach. To finish, try apricot crumble tart with ginger syrup or iced citrus soufflé served in a chocolate orange bowl. The food is backed by a very respectable wine list.
