The Wellington is the fine dining restaurant ensconced in Wynyard Hall Country House Hotel, one of the finest venues in North East England set in 150 acres of historical landscaped parkland, on the edge of Durham in the Tees Valley. Dating back to the 1800's this grand imposing manor sits beside its own lake and in its history has entertained royalty, prime ministers, generals and writers. The inspiration behind the name of the award winning restaurant comes from one of its most frequent guests, the hero of Waterloo, the Duke of Wellington. It is a strikingly sumptuous room with a rich red colour scheme, all lush fabrics, heavy drapes, ornate pictures displayed on walls and two cosy log fires creating a suitable cosseted setting for leisurely dining.

Joining the restaurant from the Dormy House Hotel, Mehdi Amiri is the talented chef pulling the strings behind the stoves, having previously worked in Michelin starred kitchens of acclaimed chefs such as Heston Blumenthal and Gordon Ramsay.

Why not start the evening with aperitifs in the library or if the weather is warm on the terrace with the spectacular view of the lake. Modern ideas abound on the menu that works its way through the likes of duck, Morteau sausage and foie gras terrine, chamomile tea and Sauternes jelly, breakfast radish and bitter almond tuille or maybe Whitby crab, carrot and walnut variations. Main courses usher in saddle of lamb, scrag-end, breast, pea mousse, peas and shallots, sheep’s milk and red dulse curd beurre noisett or curry scented sea bass, cauliflower bhaji, Israeli cous cous, cumin velouté and golden sultanas mussels. There is no let-up when it comes to the dessert stage, where you are offered such delights as chocolate soufflé, blood orange, macaroon, and fruit pastel or pineapple, coconut and tapioca cannelloni, variations of pineapple, fresh coconut and coriander.

Service is notably attentive and to cap it all there's a pianist to add a touch of glamour to the proceedings.
