Review on Bank Birmingham
One of the big players in Birmingham's revitalised restaurant scene, the Midlands outpost of the London-based Bank group is handily placed close to the International Convention Centre, the National Indoor Arena and Symphony Hall.
This is one of the prime spots for al fresco meals in the city: sit outside and watch the action on fashionable Brindleyplace overlooking the superb canal development.
A big revolving door leads through to a seemingly endless bar with a seriously designed dining room right at the back, complete with serried ranks of glass slats suspended from the ceiling and watercolours depicting dreamy seaside holidays on the walls.
It's brasserie through and through, catering for all-comers with breakfasts, express lunches, theatre deals, a kid's menu and a full carte. The kitchen goes about its business professionally, delivering a range of eclectic modern dishes that spans everything from salt cod fritters with lemon mayonnaise and confit of belly pork with buttered Savoy cabbage and carrot purée to chicken and shrimp nam rolls and seared peppered tuna with warm bean salad, crème fraîche, shallot and lemon dressing.
Desserts might include warm bread-and-butter pudding or pannacotta with strawberries and fig vincotto, and the full wine list is big, bold and full of fine drinking, with competitive prices and plenty by the glass.
