Review on Kwizeen
The people of Blackpool have learned to live with Kwizeen’s quirky name, because it delivers wonderfully ‘out-of-place’ food in a rather drab part of town between the bus station and the parish church. Since opening in 1998, Marco Callé-Calatayud have made this unpretentious bistro a favourite venue with locals, holidaymakers, business types and even party conference delegates.
Kwizeen is spread over two floors of a converted shop that has been fashionably revamped without going over the top. Fixed-price lunches are a snip, early-evening tapas attracts the theatre and showtime faithful with some inventive, palate teasing morsels, while the full menu hits the button with bold, eclectic flavours from around the globe.
The local larder inspires Fleetwood crab gâteau with warmed Morecambe Bay shrimps and salt marsh Lancashire hotpot with Bury black pudding and brown sauce, while the Mediterranean comes up with loin of veal with ratatouille and Marsala sauce or chicken breast with chilli, Mozzarella and chorizo macaroni. Likewise, desserts span everything from hot chocolate pudding to rum and pineapple tarte Tatin.
